Organisation for Nordic Co-operation

The Nordic Joint Committee for Agricultural Research (NKJ) was established in 1965 as a co-operating body for the five Nordic countries and their research funding agencies within agriculture. Later co-operation with research projects was started.

After the adjustment of NKJ by-laws in 1987, NKJ serves also in an advisory capacity to the Nordic Council of Ministers on agricultural issues.

NKJ's bylaws

The formal framework for the NKJ's activities is set out in its bylaws, which were last amended in January 1995. The bylaws define the following principal activities:

• to serve in an advisory capacity to the Nordic Council of Ministers (the ministers of agriculture) on issues relating to agricultural research and development (R&D);

• to serve in an advisory capacity or coordinate agricultural R&D when requested by the Nordic Council of Ministers through the Nordic Committee of Senior Officials for Agriculture and Forestry Affairs, and subject to Nordic funds being made available for such activities;

• to act as a contact hub for the national research councils or similar research organisations responsible for agricultural R&D.

The NKJ is required to provide advice or coordination to the extent requested by the Nordic Council of Ministers. This may also entail responsibility for following up R&D activities if funding for such activities has been made available by the Council.

Please find the NKJ Statutes here (Norwegian version).
